Application for these patterned extrusions

In thinking how i could use these patterned extrusions, one obvious option was simple a room divider or bookcase. so here are some examples of bookcases and room dividers that use patterns or just generally interesting.

Inspirational Patterns

Some patterns found in cultures. patterns like these would bring a social element to the cold industrial look of an extrusion.

Aluminium Extrusion

Extrusions can be so intricate and are often designed for a purely functional reason. With their ability to connect together wouldn't it be nice if when combined it becomes one huge never ending tessellating pattern.

examples of some designs,

Material World - Aluminium - Concepts

Concept 1 - Aluminium Side Table
  • Made from sheet aluminium
  • Two vertical and two horizontal drawers

Concept 2 - Billet Clock
  • Superformed then CNC routed hour and minute face
  • Secured to the wall via a backing plate

Concept 3 - Ingot Lamp
  • Superformed housing
  • Acrylic sheet
  • 4 8mm round dome top LED's
  • Concept included 6 lamps connected in parallel

Once again the a3 scanner wasn't working in the labs so i had to photograph them.

Superforming

Superforming is the latest in manufacturing aluminium. the basic concept is the same as Vacuum Forming plastics but instead of a vacuum; pressure is used. Firstly the aluminium sheet is heated to 400-500 degrees Celsius. Then with extreme air pressure the heated sheet is forced into a negative of the mould.

Superforming has been used by designers like Ron Arad, Danish company KEF and Marc Newson

Final Design: CANISTER

My presentation boards for tomorrow,

First board, gives an intro to the design and a brief explanation
of my intent, also a few features

Second board shows the details of the design. and considerations of
the that I had to address

The final board shows the design in its final situation

Nearly there

Pic taken just after i put the last coat of primer

The handle was the most difficult part; had to carve the top bit of the handle with a dremel.... ...inhaled so much dust
