Round 2: Developed Concepts
These are my second concepts. after considering the most appropriate manufacturing process to be extrusions, my aim was to use the intricacies of some extrusions to form patterns when joined together.
I know these concept boards look the same but actually their patterned screens are different.

However other than the concept boards i also had some CAD printouts with other pattens that attracted more attention than my boards. the concept i ended up moving forward with was one of the CAD patterns (seen below).

Jigsaw Storage by Tom Seymour
I found this modular storage design during my research, its by Tom Seymour. honestly i think its a bit to obvious and literal but i think its a good example of what i am trying to do. By using a single mould i want to create a repeatable pattern, however now I'm leaning more towards designing a bookcase as opposed to a partition screen.

Application for these patterned extrusions
Inspirational Patterns
Aluminium Extrusion
Material World - Aluminium - Concepts
Concept 1 - Aluminium Side Table
- Made from sheet aluminium
- Two vertical and two horizontal drawers
Concept 2 - Billet Clock
- Superformed then CNC routed hour and minute face
- Secured to the wall via a backing plate
Concept 3 - Ingot Lamp
- Superformed housing
- Acrylic sheet
- 4 8mm round dome top LED's
- Concept included 6 lamps connected in parallel
Once again the a3 scanner wasn't working in the labs so i had to photograph them.
Superforming
Superforming is the latest in manufacturing aluminium. the basic concept is the same as Vacuum Forming plastics but instead of a vacuum; pressure is used. Firstly the aluminium sheet is heated to 400-500 degrees Celsius. Then with extreme air pressure the heated sheet is forced into a negative of the mould.
Superforming has been used by designers like Ron Arad, Danish company KEF and Marc Newson

sorry the scanner wasn't working so i had to take a photo

- Designed to emulate the luxury found in kitchen interiors
- Styrofoam insulation covered in a brushed stainless steel sleeve
- Vertical ridges provide additional grip
- Twist off lid
- Handle folds into recess in the handle

- Gel pack used as insulation as well as padding for the bottle.
- Three part design; lid, middle gel attachment, bottom container.
- Injection moulded ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or HDPE (High density PolyEthylene).
- Strap for over the shoulder use.

How empty nesters like to live
This is a video of some empty nesters and how they prefer to live; especially after children. it also provides examples of their preferred furnishings. This would be a perfect example of our tribe.

Introduction
Empty Nesters is our tribe
"Children leaving the parental home marks a time of freedom, spontaneity, time and satisfaction for empty nesters. Nesters don’t see the children departing as being a ‘life stage’ as such, but rather a natural progression, another step forward. There are other events which they believe will trigger real change… retirement, the loss of a partner or financial difficulties are amongst these.
This is a transitional time for this generation….children leaving, grandchildren being born, parents dying, retirement looming and old-age knocking. "
